The National spotlight fell on Southwark primary school pupils this week as they helped raise the profile of International Children’s Day in Britain.

Over 250 children from 5 local schools lined the Millennium bridge on Bankside to symbolically ‘bridge the Gap’ between the developing world and the developed world.

As St Pauls struck noon they released hundreds of balloons on behalf of the nations children.

Over the past three weeks pupils have been taking part in a competition to draw a picture of what they look like now and of what they wanted to be in the future.

The student's drawings from the 'I can' campaign will be sent to every MP in the country.

Winning Entries

India Hicks, patron of Rachael’s Children’s Trust, and Andrew Radford, Deputy Executive Director for UNICEF (UK), were on hand outside the Tate Modem to congratulate the winning artists.

“Every generation has a responsibility to empower and affirm the next generation,” said Ms Hicks. “It is time for us to celebrate our children.”
